How Clean Is Your Beauty Routine?

CLEAN BEAUTY IS HERE TO STAY!

Awakened Beauty aims to reduce the carbon footprint it has on our planet. The multi (~$500) billion dollar beauty industry that I work in takes a serious toll on the environment and as an environmentalist at heart, that doesn't sit well with me.

By now you are seeing a shift toward "clean beauty."  What exactly does that mean? Well, it's about using products without ingredients that harm. Research is showing how many cosmetic ingredients have harmful effects and are even considered endocrine disruptors. Our endocrine system governs our hormones and that's especially important for women who want to have normal menstrual cycles, a healthy libido, and conceive! (MORE on the endocrine system later because it's something I'm learning more about and fascinated by!)

Europe regulates ingredients far more than the US. Currently, the US bans only 11 cosmetic ingredients while the EU has outlawed or restricted 1300. Staggering! We're making progress with the help of people and companies who care, like BeautyCounter, but we've got a long way to go.

So consumers and beauty professionals alike are starting to take matters into their own hands and are becoming more mindful about what they put on their hair, skin or face and what they buy. Credo Beauty is a beauty store (think Sephora but the "clean" version) that has a "Dirty List" of 2700 ingredients and will only sell brands that meet their guidelines. Credo Beauty, by the way, will help you swap your old, dirty makeup for something new and clean. BeautyCounter is another beauty company that has a dirty list of 1800 ingredients.

Because this is so important to me, I am filling my makeup kit with mostly CLEAN brands. There are a few exceptions (i.e. the glue I use to apply false lashes, waterproof products & lip stains) but my goal is to transition to all clean beauty because it's safer for you, for me, and for our planet.

With social media's profound influence on beauty today, women will use anything to look a certain way. The industry is valued so high for a reason! And I believe women have a right to play with beauty and use whatever they want. But I just want to make it clear that my vision is for a cleaner, greener, safer way and I want to attract customers who want the same.
